Maintainance of sump pumps

You don't want to be flooded in the next heavy rain.  If you have a basement you probabbly have a sump pump.  A sump pump is an electrical water pump that takes water from the low area below the basement floor and pumps it out and away from the structure.  For a newer house in the Bay Area  it will pump it into a drywell.  For an older house it may pump the water right into the storm drain.

Put it it on your calendar to once a year or more often check your drywall pump.  You may have multiple dry well pumps.  Check them all so you are not unpleasantly surprised with a flood during the next rain.  Make sure the leaves and things are cleared from your area drains and that the sump pumps are working well so your home is prepared for the next storm.
